For original paper see ibid., vol.17, p.L551 (1984). Delley has attempted to explain the observation of a lower size limit in mass spectra of multiply charged Pb clusters. Cluster ions are produced by electron impact, ions Pbnz+ are only observed above a critical size nmin(z)=30, 45, and 72 for z=2, 3, 4 respectively. Echt accepts that the vertical ionisation and subsequent charge redistribution result in excited cluster ions, but argues that Delley's quantitative analysis of nmin(z) is based on invalid assumptions.
