The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Gd3+ in LaCl3.7H2O, with 1/500 dilution of Gd/La ions, is studied with an X-band spectrometer at 295K, 79K, 4.63K, and 1.59K. The low-temperature data is used to determine the signs of parameters. In particular, the following values of the g tensor and the zero-field splitting parameters b20 and b22 are found: at 295K gzz=1.994+or-0.005, gxx=1.996+or-0.005, gyy=2.001+or-0.005, b20=-1.177+or-0.015 GHz, b22=0.659+or-0.015 GHz; at 1.59K, gzz=2.000+or-0.020, gxx=1.992+or-0.020, b20=-0.918+or-0.060 GHz, b22=1.023+or-0.060 GHz. The values of all other parameters are also determined. Estimates are made of the extent of admixture of the excited 6P7/2 state with the ground state 8S7/2.
