Students' reasonings in solid mechanics

Abstract

An inquiry has been carried out among French students in order to investigate their understanding of the evolution of an object (translation, rotation and deformation). The results show difficulties in appreciating that these different phenomena can occur simultaneously and the exact role of points where the force is acting. Some pedagogical suggestions are made.
