Abstract

A new type of hydrodynamic instability has been observed in the boundary layer convection of argon and oxygen on a heated vertical plate when the fluids are very near the gas-liquid critical point [∣TTc∣/Tc = O(10−6)]. The convection pattern has been investigated by means of video microscopy. Characteristic properties of the convection structures are described.
