Abstract

The counterions condensed on rodlike polyion segments are polarized by the longitudinal component of an external electric field. We show that the polarizability is diminished by electrostatic interactions among the rods. This result may be a useful step toward the understanding of anomalous birefringence of charged rodlike particles such as fd virus in conditions favoring interactions.
