The low-lying states of 135Ba and 137Ba have been studied by means of Coulomb excitation with 14N, 16O and alpha particles. Angular distribution measurements were carried out for some transitions in both nuclei with 11.2 MeV alpha particles. Level energies, decay schemes, branching ratios, B(E2) to values and some spin assignments have been established. For the first time the authors have measured B(E2) to values in 137Ba and a new level at 1252.5 MeV with spin 7/2+ was observed. 137B and 135Ba have been described theoretically by coupling one and three holes, respectively, to the quadrupole vibrations, and rather good agreement with experiment was obtained.
