Abstract

"DFT beyond the ground state" is the title of the present volume, and it is a result of the "EXC!TiNG Summer School: DFT beyond the ground state", held at Riksgränsen, Sweden, 22–30 June 2003. The school was the third meeting of the European Union Research and Training Network (EU RTN) "EXC!TiNG" (contract number: HPRN-CT-2002-00317), following the meetings in Graz, Austria, April 2002, and Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, April 2003.

The school brought together 57 participants from 15 countries in order to discuss the problem of calculating excited states and optical spectra using ab initio methods, and to present the current state of the art in the field. The present volume is comprised of papers covering theoretical and numerical aspects of "DFT beyond the ground state", as well as experimental techniques and results, and how they can be interpreted.

The conference received financial support from the EXC!TiNG network, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences through its Nobel Institute for Physics, the Swedish Research Council, and the Physics Department of Uppsala University. This support made it possible to invite a number of speakers external to the network, contributing heavily to the success of the school.
