Abstract
The role of the symmetries, phases and deformation is analysed in the interrelation of the cluster, shell and collective models. Based on that a symmetry-adapted method is presented for the determination of the shape isomers, and for the study of their possible fragmentation. Comparison with experimental data is discussed both for the cluster-shell competition, and for the existence and fragmentation of shape isomeres.
