In 1987, a review of CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research) under the chairmanship of Anatole Abragam made far-reaching recommendations for a slimmer, more cost-effective, but still world-leading organisation. After difficult discussions the implementation of most of the recommendations was agreed and the exercise is now complete.
