Help: IP addresses and how to register them

Access to our Electronic Journals service is controlled by IP address registration. Every computer that communicates over the Internet is assigned an IP address that uniquely identifies it.

The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. An example of an IP address is as follows: 1.160.10.240.

The IP address of the machine you are using is displayed on the Journal Subscriptions at your site page. More detailed information is available via our check-up page.

You can check whether or not your site is registered for access on the Journal subscriptions at your site page. If your site is not yet registered, instructions on how to register your site are available.

If your site is registered, your Site Contact (shown on the Journal subscriptions at your site page) will have access to a list of the IP addresses that are currently registered for access. Further information on our IP address list facility is available.

Any new IP addresses or changes to the list should be confirmed to us by the Site Contact.

Instructions for Site Contacts:

Before registering additional IP addresses, you must check that you are doing so in accordance with our Network Licence policy. Please contact custserv@iop.org if you would like to explore this option or have any questions.

To register additional IP addresses, please email the details to custserv@iop.org, including the following information:

  1. Your Site Key
  2. Please confirm that the new addresses do not include any belonging to institutions which are not legally part of your site i.e. not in the same legal entity (for example autonomous research institutes)
  3. Please confirm that the new addresses do not include proxy or caching servers accessible to users at institutions, which are not legally part of your site
  4. Please declare any known proxy server addresses, as we set higher access limits on these type of addresses to ensure that the higher number of downloads expected are accommodated.

If you have any queries, please contact custserv@iop.org.
