Help: GZip

The PostScript files provided on this service are compressed using the compression method gzip. Gzip is widely available for a number of platforms. If you currently do not have gzip installed you will need to download a copy before you can use the PostScript files.

Downloading and using gzip software

To obtain the latest versions select your operating system from the list below.

Macintosh

We recommend the Macintosh software MacGzip although there are other decompression programs that you may prefer. You can download a copy of MacGzip from this site. Installation instructions are available once you have decompressed the downloaded program.

When you choose to download a gzipped PostScript file from this service, it will be saved on your computer. To decompress the file, simply drag and drop the desired file onto the application icon whilst holding down the 'Shift' key (represented by an upward-pointing arrow). Alternatively, you can open the application and specify the file to decompress by selecting 'Expand to...' under the 'File' menu. Full instructions are included with the application.

Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS

For Windows, we recommend Winzip, which can be downloaded from www.winzip.com.

For MS-DOS, we recommend the MS-DOS software gzip.exe. You can download a copy from this site. Installation instructions are available once you have decompressed the downloaded program.

To use gzip, you need to have your computer in MS-DOS mode. (Windows users can do this by double-clicking the 'MS-DOS Prompt' icon in the 'Main' group of the Program Manager).

You then need to type the following command at the MS-DOS prompt:

  gzip -d filename

where filename is the name of the compressed PostScript file.

To leave MS-DOS mode on a Windows system, type exit.

UNIX

You can download the source code distribution of gzip from this site. Installation instructions are available once you have unpacked the downloaded program.

To decompress a file, type at the UNIX prompt:

  gzip -d filename

where filename is the name of the compressed PostScript file.

Please note: IOP Publishing takes no responsibility for any damage caused to your machine as a result of downloading and using a program from this server. All programs have been checked for viruses.
